another digital tutorial i did!

It is a little off in a few places. I really struggled with the face, I think i just messed up my underdrawing. But here it is! I need a lot more practice but it's coming together!

  1. Seriously... for this being only your second one... I think you've improved actually more than I could imagine!

This is actually a little insane in my opinion.
Your value is a little off, but damn!
I saw this very early and it looked nothing like this!
I think I actually said to someone just earlier today that in a few weeks time you'll have caught up for sure!
I'll have to properly critique this later today as I'm just reeling at where it came from when I last saw. Killing it! KILLING IT!

  2. Alright. Here we go.

    Critique:

+'s : You're starting to gather the mass shapes. For example, the (our left) leg has the right large triangular shape of light that is coming off of it. You've struggled a little with where the light hits I believe, but it appears as though your thinking of it as a cylindrical object.
Basically it looks like your handling light well overall. Sure, the contrast could be pushed more to really pop the woman out, but your on the way.
She doesn't appear off balance. Usually when I paint things tend to shift a little one way or the other, but from what I can see (and from flipping the canvas) you've made her appear pretty solidly planted on the ground.

-'s: You could push the contrast a bit further by making the lights, lighter, and the darks, darker. Some things to consider that will make your piece pop a little sometimes. You can make an adjustment layer on the top that deals with the levels. All the tutorials that I could find made it a little overly confusing so I'll have to show you what I mean here.
Continue studying construction lines (the sketch layer) to really solidify your undersketch. This might be the most important part and I think you even noticed in your own critique. This can actually be remedied with just doing a ton of studies of facial construction and body construction. I would actually recommend Figure Drawing for All It's Worth by Andrew Loomis. You can find them here I believe: http://illustrationage.com/2013/04/02/free-andrew-loomis-art-instruction-downloads/
Your rendering looks a little shaky, but this isn't actually something I would recommend working on right away. This will come naturally with more time and practice of the tools.

Overall though, honestly, this is pretty damn good for only a second go at digital painting ever. Only other thing I can think to say is to grab the entire figure and line it up with the other. Also something small that might help (even though many people would consider this cheating) is to take the original photo, and make a new layer and draw out all of the construction that you can. Basically take the sketch layer and try and see if you can push it on the original photograph.

Anyway, enough rambling for now. I'll set you up with a proper 'assignment' again this upcoming week. I think you'll be super good at this in no time! If you want to do more painting, I would just suggest to grab another pose off of that website and try again, or try doing a master copy. But mainly just search out the composition in the master study for now rather than trying to fully render it... unless you want, but it can be a time investment.
